They arrived! They arrived!!!

This is my first order with Moo.com, and I must say that they did a fantastic job! I am most impressed. I'll definitely be going back. They have SO many products to choose from and they give creative ideas for everything! They even have *STICKERS*

I got 60 prints total, 20 of each drawing. They printed them on pretty thick paper (postcard paper) with a glossy finish. I'm going to be selling them at the Summer Celebration next week!!!

The backs of them have my name and a couple of my websites. I'll also be signing them as little limited edition prints.

I am just on a roll! I'm going crazy with my ink drawings. I just finished my bear today but then started and finished a drawing of a bobcat! They're such cute cats... I'm surprised I never thought much of them before! Here's the before and after pictures:

Such a drastic change! This is probably one of my fastest drawings yet. It took me just one hour from start to finish! However, the lines here aren't as precise as the horse and the bear. I'm getting looser and more scribbly. I like it, though.

I've been working like crazy on ink drawings! Here's one I'm currently working on, A GRIZZLY BURRRR!!!!!

I figured this would be a good animal to draw since UofM's mascost is the grizzly. I'll be doing a bobcat next for MSU..

In other news, I'm getting a TON of requests for drawings! I'm so trilled and excited for everyone's support! Thank you, and keep them coming! I simply NEED to go to California this summer to see my friends one last time (before they all graduate college and move away from the Bay Area!)

Well, I'm stuck. I'm on vacation, and my train back home isn't in service because of all the flooding. Luckily, I brought my brown sketchbook and my ink pens. I'm going to be drawing all week for the Belt Celebration on July 2. I'm going to have prints of them made so people can buy them for cheeeeap! Here's the first one I completed:

Here's a preview of my latest drawing. It's a commission from someone here in this little town in Montana. I'm using an ancient black and white picture, and I'm adding in a bit of "french grey" to give it a more sepia feel... It also gives me an excuse to use my prismacolor colored pencils instead of regular graphite pencils. I prefer my colored pencils ;)

Jean Marie Pescador

I wanted to paint a watercolor portrait, since I am now getting used to the paints again. I chose to paint my cousin Jean!

About half-way through painting her face I realized that her eye is off... I was so frustrated that I rushed through sketching and didn't pay close enough attention to something as major as where her eyes are positioned!!! However, I kept going, as the point of this project was to practice controlling my watercolors. Sorry Jean, I'll try again some other day :D

Gaspard Ulliel!!!

I feel much better about this drawing than the last one I did of him on the brown paper. I quickly sketched this out in an hour, but then spent an additional 30 minutes or so tweaking his eyes... I'm still not satisfied with them. However, it is late and I am tired. Oh my goodness it's almost 2:00am! What happened!?

I'm thinking about transferring this to watercolor paper tomorrow to try my hand at painting a portrait with watercolors. The last drawing I did was easy because I had outlines to work with. Time to raise the bar >:D

Also, I know I must be tired because when I look at this drawing from an angle, he looks like Jim Carrey and it's driving me crazy! Nothing wrong with Jim Carrey, of course, but oh my eyes are playing tricks on me x_x

Here are a couple snapshots of my latest drawing. It features a 1/2 octopus 1/2 girl monster. The finished product will have a lot of dark colors and shadows... There is going to be so much pigment on this when I finish x_x

I'm also picking up my old techniques, such as the smudge-erase method that grinds the tooth of the paper down to a smooth finish. Her face has a lot of depth so far, and I think it's because I drew-erased-redrew it at least five times.

I bought a Strathmore Visual Journal at ArtMaterials last weekend.
I'm taking it literally and using it as a journal. I love this book because instead of flimsy paper you get sheets of THICK bristol board. Oh so happy.

I smudged out the words because they're personal and private... Sometime later I'll scan and upload an unaltered copy :)

I went to a flute recital today.

a couple years ago I went to a piano festival and drew one of the pianists... since then i've always brought a sketchbook to my friends' recitals to draw them while they play. of course i am still paying attention and listening well to their performance ;P

At the end i have them sign the drawing ^^ it's like i capture the music--the musician signs the drawing, not me.

I got a new pen! It's a Pentel Brush Pen, with a brush tip instead of a felt/ballpoint-tip. I can create lines that vary in thickness, and it can get pretty thin. I also bought an XS Faber-Castell ink pen to draw itty bitty lines.

I wanted to give them a go today. I used this image from lookbook.nu (my favorite site to find pictures of beautiful people ;u;)

Oh geez.

I drew fan art. I haven't done fan art in -YEARS- I think the last one was that picture of Mario I drew for my brother a couple Christmases ago:

Heck yes.

But this is fan art I have never ventured into. This is ANIME fan art. I think I may have died a little inside.

It's the main characters Hagi and Saya from the series Blood+... SO GOOD ;_; We watched the entire series on Netflix. I was so sad when we reached the last episode. At least it isn't like some of the other shows that have 300 episodes... Nah it only has about 50 episodes. Lots of blood, lots of monsters, lots of tension... And it's so omg romantic *u*

I'm gonna clean up the pencil smudges (holy geez look at all of it) and take a better picture/scan it later.

I drew them from memory and didn't use any reference photos for poses or anything. Alll in my head ^^ That's probably why they don't really look like the real thing. Saya's hair is too long in my drawing :(

OCTOPUS TATTOOO!!!
Colored super fast in Photoshop... I mentioned before that the only program I am proficient in is simple, simple Oekaki/Shi-Painter (besides mspaint lol!) so I spent a long time messing with the functions of photoshop before getting a handle on things.

I'll probably use photoshop more in the future since it is such a huge program in the art world... I'll always prefer traditional art though. I need to be able to feel my image and paper, smell the wood of my pencils, and be able to simply grab my supplies.

One thing I love about digital art: Ctrl+Z. When I was obsessed with oekakis, I ONLY drew on the computer. When I tried to draw on paper, I would feel disoriented because I couldn't simply undo that line I just laid down... I'm weird, I know...

ANYWAY here's the octopus and the general ideas I had for it.

I know I haven't updated in a while, but I'm drawing everyday. I swear!!!

I'm kind of changing the rules though... I'm not going to finish a drawing everyday, but will work on SOME drawing every day. I need to start working on bigger works.

I scanned a bunch of drawings the other day at the library. If you haven't noticed, I changed the images in some of the previous posts to these new scans.

Tonight I am going to color that octopus! The girl needs it within the next two days!

I know I didn't update in two days. But believe me, I am drawing every day! Even after my 12 hour car trip back to college I drew a picture. Sometimes the drawings will be pretty refined, and other times they will be more sketchy.

A DRAWING A DAY...

I sketched this up about last week, and just got around coloring it. It's not that fantastic overall, but I like separate elements on their own... Such as the 'ripped' appearance of the border, the gradual gradient of blues into whites, the play with negative space. Eh. It's okay. It was originally going to be all blue but I decided to throw some orange in there for some depth and contrast.

I may or may not scan this later. Taking photos of a drawing really washes the colors out >_< I tried tweaking the colors in photoshop a bit.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I have three resolutions for this year...
1) Drink enough water every day
2) Do pilates exercises for at least 4/7 days a week
3) Draw EVERY DAY.

To start off this year, I wanted to go back to the roots of my development as an artist: oekakis. Sure, I have been drawing all my life, but when I found out about oekakis, specifically http://neoartists.org/oekaki, I was addicted to drawing. I was about 12 or 13 when I started to draw on this oekaki board, and the improvements I made were huge. There were not too many members so each person felt included in the artistic community. Everyone was friendly to each other, and gave advice on improvements. I drew over 300 images on this board, each image striving to be better than the previous.

Woohoo! I did this yesterday for my little brother! He loves Totoro and so I told my mom to buy him a grey hoodie and I'd paint a big Totoro on it!

I asked him if he wanted a whole totoro or just his face, and well, he chose the face. I'm really happy with how it turned out. This fabric paint I bought is amazing! The brand is Tulip and when it dries it isn't all crusty and stiff. The fabric is still flexible and soft <3

I bought myself shirts to paint on. I got a grey one (totoro!), a yellow one, and a purple striped one. They were all ridiculously cheap from the clearance sections of various stores. The average cost was like $4 each. Because they were cheap, I'm not afraid to paint on them!

I found this awesome site called posemaniacs.com, which has thousands of poses that you can view, study, and draw from. They're all anatomical mannequins, so all you see is the muscle.

The site is really handy, there are little 'games' you can play, like 30 second drawing and negative space drawing. Full body poses are rather hard, so I hope that daily practice with this site will help my improvement.

Hand Study!

Hands are the hardest thing to draw >_< I figured if I sat down and drew hands all day, they'd be easier. I was right. The first hand I drew was the one at the top-left, and that one took me a good 30 minutes to draw (pathetic). I drew them in writing order, so it goes top-left to top-right, middle-left to middle-right, etc. all the way down. By the time I got to the bottom, I was spitting these out in about 5-10 minutes each. I got my references from nykolai.deviantart.com . They have tons of hands to reference from, and I'll probably be drawing more of them soon.

I'm starting a prisamcolor pencil drawing of two sun conures. It illustrates the word "love" for my 100 themes project. Aren't they cute!? I wanted to try a new style, hence the dark outline in ballpoint pen. I'm also trying to do this as fast as I can... I've maybe spent 4 hours on it so far? Still not fast enough!!!

It is so late!!

I spent my evening looking at a child prodigy's website: Akiane

Well, because I was looking through such inspirational art, inspiration hit me. So in the middle of the night I decided to start working on my next piece, and illustration for the 100 Themes List (that I've wanted to attempt for years but never got around to it). The first theme on this massive list is Introduction. Appropriate, yes? It is the first drawing of the whole series. Yet, coming up with an idea to start off this massive project is hard. But tonight it hit me what I wanted to do.

It's a fantasy that I've always had as a child--to be able to talk to animals and befriend them, yadda yadda. I'm sure most people have wanted that ability at one point or another. My favorite animals are mostly birds, so I had a sketch planned out in my head of a girl with a chickadee perched on her fingertips. I couldn't wait until the morning to start working on it, so I decided to go for it now. Here is what I have so far:

Sorry it is dark. It is late. But you get the idea. Right now it isn't very dark, all I have done was outline it lightly in ballpoint pen. Yes, this one shall be a ballpoint piece. As you can see, the chickadee's legs are much darker.

Since the ink has to dry before I can erase the pencil sketch, I'm off to bed. I cannot wait to finish this tomorrow!

First Post!!!

I'm glad that I've decided to make a sketchblog. A lot of people have seen my work at my deviantart before, but the majority of what is posted there are realistic portraits. Most haven't seen my illustrative works before, because I usually sketch them out and then never finish them. That is the purpose of this blog--to publish those many sketches that would otherwise remain hidden in my sketchbooks.

I hope this works out ^^
